Miyagawa-chō and Miyagawasuji form one of Kyoto’s quietly significant historic areas, running alongside the Kamo River in southern Higashiyama. Shaped by river life and daily rhythms since the Edo period, the district developed as a lived-in neighbourhood rather than a ceremonial one.
Preserved Machiya townhouses, subtle architecture, small temples and long-established restaurants define the area, offering an understated and authentic view of Kyoto that is experienced from within rather than on display.
